As retired army veteran, Greg Gabel, diligently works to repair an engine part before harvest, he tells YCN about growing up on a farm in Huntley Project.
“I’m basically a fourth-generation farmer,” said Gabel; his great grandparents started the farm nearly a century ago.
He graduated from Huntley Project High School in 1997 with an ROTC scholarship and enlisted in the army, where he spent the next 20 years. Working his way up the chain of command, Gabel was a Black Hawk Helicopter Pilot, and ended his career as a Lieutenant Colonel.
“I’ve been in command of almost every aviation unit all the way up to Battalion Command,” he stated, “and Fort Rucker, Alabama, was my last command.”
Gabel never forgot his roots, however, and now he’s back to keep the family tradition – sugar beets – going. He’s got plenty of space to hone his craft, as he stated sugar beets are currently the only crop he is responsible for.
