After reportedly shooting a male victim at the Motel 6 off Midland Rd. in Billings, 39-year-old Candace April Roberts told officers she was considering “suicide by cop”, but decided it “would just be easier to go back to prison,” according to court documents.

Billings Police Department (BPD) responded to the motel on July 31, 2022, at around 8:15 p.m. after receiving reports that a male victim was shot and that the suspect fled the scene headed toward Mullowney Lane.

The victim had suffered a shot to his upper right leg, and he told the officer on scene that a Native American woman known as “Candy” was who shot him. Candy was later identified as Candace Roberts.

Officers located Roberts a short time later near the Casey’s Corner gas station off Blue Creek Road, and according to court documents, she was prepared to be arrested and essentially admitted to her involvement in the shooting. After being handcuffed, Roberts stated she had contemplated committing “suicide by cop”, but ended up deciding it would be easier for her to go back to prison instead.
