New Huntley fire station planned

WORDEN — With land deed in hand, the Worden Volunteer Fire Department plans for an improved Huntley fire station are beginning to take shape.

Lance Taylor, fire chief, said at Tuesday’s fire board meeting that the new building is not as far along as he hoped it would be after the fire department obtained the deed for the land from the Bureau of Reclamation earlier this year.

The original quote for the new building, which will be large enough to house the department’s newer fire trucks, came in at around $1 million, about twice as much as Taylor had budgeted.

He said Tuesday that he’s looking into a blueprint similar to the Blue Creek fire station and hopes the estimate for that plan is closer to the mark.

“As soon as I get that quote we’ll get the building committee together again,” Taylor said.

The department will likely seek a combination of grants and loans to augment the district’s budget for the new fire hall.

The existing fire station on Northern Avenue will be torn down to make way for the new one, Taylor said. Structural problems rule out remodeling the current building.
