Many possible solutions were discussed in case of a budget shortage at the Feb. 20 Huntley Project (HP) School Board meeting, including running a mill levy, using online sources for supplies, and implementing a four-day week.
Superintendent Mark Wandle presented some of the pros and cons of a four-day week. Some of the benefits include saving money on fuel for buses, as well as on heating and utilities. Wandle said studies have shown four-day weeks lead to decreased absences – for both staff and students. Also, teachers and students would be able to use Fridays to schedule appointments. Athletes would miss less class time. He also noted the potential for the district to save up to 10% on drinking water with a four-day week.
One of the disadvantages discussed was the “perception that it is a day off,” which Wandle says is not the case.
