Sept. 26 is the last day that the monument’s visitor center will be open for the 2015 season. Hours of operation are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The monument will also host several small volunteer projects as part of NPLD as well as a Volunteer Appreciation Picnic and Honor Garden Ceremony. Started in 1994, NPLD has become the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer event for public lands. It’s an opportunity to educate the public about key natural and historical resource issues, build partnerships, and improve our public sites through stewardship and the hard work of thousands of volunteers.

Pompeys Pillar contains the signature of Captain William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Clark’s inscription is the expedition’s only remaining physical evidence visible on the Corp of Discovery’s trail. An interpretive center at the site recounts Clark’s journey through the Yellowstone Valley in 1806. The Pillar overlooks the Yellowstone River about 25 miles east of Billings. The area is easily accessible from Interstate 94, using exit 23, or from Montana Highway 312. More information on the national monument can be found at http://blm.gov/99jd.
