The 2013 annual Clark Days are set to kick off this weekend at Pompeys Pillar National Monument on July 27th and 28th. This years event theme is “Revisiting Our Native Heritage” at the Monument. The celebration and activites at the Pillar are kid friendly and family oriented. Its an opportunity for the whole family to experience and relive a little of the West and learn some additional history from the Famous Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1806 where William Clark Carved his name in the Famous Monument. This location is the only physical evidence where Clark’s name is carved on the monument. As entrance fees are waived this weekend at the monument, the following is a schedule of events during the annual celebration.
2013 Clark Days Schedule:
Saturday, July 27
3-5 p.m. Kids/family events and activities; 4-8 p.m. – Walking tacos and ice cream;
5:30–8:30 p.m. – Native American storytellers; 9 p.m. – Ghost stories by the campfire.
Free overnight camping (RV & tent – No hookups)
Sunday July 28
7-8 a.m. Guided bird walk;
7-9 a.m. – Huntley Project Lion’s Club pancake breakfast;
9:30-10:30 a.m. – Elk River Brigade and flag-raising ceremony;
10:30–2:30 p.m. – Historical demonstrations, booths, displays, etc.;
10:30 a.m. to noon – Barbara Loeb & Mardell Plainfeather resent “The Woman Who Loved Mankind” (Amphitheater);
11 a.m.-2 p.m. – Food will be served (Indian tacos, buffalo burgers and ice cream);
noon – 4 p.m. Native American music and cultural presentations (main stage):
1:30–3 p.m. – Bob Garritson – Stone Age technology (amphitheater).
Clark Days are held at Pompeys Pillar each year on the last weekend of July. The event commemorates William Clark’s stop at the site on July 25, 1806, on his trip down the Yellowstone River. Activities include interpretive programs, demonstrations, nature walks, and a main presentation. The Saturday night of Clark Days is the only night of the year when overnight camping is allowed at the Pillar. The Bureau of Land Management has park rangers on duty at the visitor center to assist campers. Admission fees are waived during Clark Days which is sponsored jointly by the Bureau of Land Management and the Pompeys Pillar Historical Association.
