Have you been wondering what all the construction is on Old Highway 312? Was it just water pipes that broke, utility work being completed or is it actually an upgrade to Highway 312?
As you may know, there are plans in the works to upgrade some roads in the Yellowstone County area whether it be just widening some roads with upgrades or constructing completely new roads like the Billings Northend Bypass (From Lockwood to the Billings Heights)? Eitherway, it is a good thing to see progress on the East side of Yellowstone County.
Planned construction for Shepherd Road and Highway 312
So what will the project on Highway 312 consist of? The proposed project includes enhancements to each intersection to better accommodate traffic movements and improve safety. The improvements at each intersection are unique to that location, and are designed to fit the particular situation, providing the best balance of safety and cost, while minimizing impacts to adjacent landowners, as well as to the environment.
This project will affect those traveling from the Shepherd and Huntley Project area to Billings and vice versa. In addition, it could also indirectly affect those that might use Pioneer Road as a secondary artery road to Lockwood from Shepherd using the Northend Bypass Road (which could be completed as soon as 2020).

Public meetings:
An informational public meeting for this project was held at the Independent Grade School on Monday, May 14, 2007. At this meeting, the project design team presented the current plan to improve each of the four intersections that make up this project. These plans are preliminary, but present a good idea of what MDT plans on doing to make these intersections safer and more “user friendly”. Meeting attendees were asked to comment on the project – let the design team know what they thought of the project and what their concerns are. The design team also answered questions concerning project specifics.
